Article 14 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that,
“Everyone has the right to seek and to enjoy in other countries asylum from persecution.”
When refugees seek asylum they are only exercising what is widely recognised as a basic human right.
But successive Australian governments, both Labor and Liberal, have sought to curtail the ability of people seeking asylum to find it in Australia. Why have they done this? As a signatory to the UN Refugee Convention has Australia reneged on its commitments? What forces people to make the dangerous journey to Australia. Are they “queue jumpers”? Is there really a “queue”?
These and more questions will be discussed.
Speakers from the Tamil Community and Refugee Rights Action Network. More to be announced.
Admission will be by donation.
